In 2005, jewelry maker Ileana Makri found the perfect vacation home—a whitewashed cottage on the island of Patmos, Greece. “Most of the furniture was passed down from my parents,” she says. “The trinkets are from my travels.” To get the summery vibe for your own beach house, “don’t be afraid to take risks with color and furniture shapes that you wouldn’t normally use,” says interior designer Joshua Greene, co-founder of New York-based Hernandez Greene. “Designing for a second home should be fun,” he says. “Whatever you do, make it feel easy.
